When the text declares that this love is directed toward “the LORD your God,” the sacred name YHWH (יהוה) appears. Each letter of this divine Name is rich in meaning. Yod (י) is a hand, symbolizing power and action. Hey (ה) is revelation again, God’s self-disclosure to His people. Vav (ו) is a hook or connector, joining heaven and earth, eternity and time. The final Hey (ה) once again signifies revelation, grace, and the breath of life. To love YHWH is to respond to the One who reveals Himself and stretches forth His hand to connect the unseen with the seen, the eternal with the temporal.

Jesus’ Answer (Matthew 18:22)
Peter comes to Jesus with what seems like a generous offer: “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?”
In Jewish tradition, rabbis often taught that forgiving someone three times was enough, and the fourth time you did not need to forgive.
Peter more than doubles that number, perhaps expecting Jesus to commend him for being so gracious. Seven, after all, was a holy and complete number in Jewish thought.
But Jesus surprises him with an answer that goes far beyond human expectations.
Jesus says: “I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”
This doesn’t mean we should literally count to 490 and then stop forgiving. Instead, it’s symbolic language. Jesus is saying forgiveness should be limitless.
Forgiveness is not about keeping score, but about cultivating a heart that reflects the mercy of God.
Just as God forgives us again and again without limit, we are called to do the same for others.
Lessons We Learn from This Teaching
1. Forgiveness is Not About Numbers
Peter was thinking in terms of limits—“how much is enough?” But Jesus teaches that true forgiveness cannot be measured. It is a lifestyle, not a quota.
2. Forgiveness Reflects God’s Character
God forgives His children again and again when they repent. When we forgive others, we are imitating our Father in heaven.
3. Unforgiveness Creates Chains
Holding on to bitterness and grudges enslaves us. Forgiveness sets not only the other person free but also our own hearts.
4. Forgiveness Doesn’t Mean Forgetting or Excusing Sin
Jesus never says forgiveness is ignoring wrong. It is releasing someone from our personal judgment and trusting God with justice.
5. Forgiveness Heals Relationships
Communities, families, and friendships are restored and strengthened when forgiveness flows. Without it, resentment slowly destroys unity.
6. Forgiveness Is Ongoing
The number “seventy times seven” reminds us that forgiveness is a process. Sometimes we need to keep forgiving the same person for the same wrong because the wound keeps resurfacing in our hearts.
Connecting to God’s Forgiveness
We forgive because we have been forgiven. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught us to pray: “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12).
Paul echoes this truth: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).
Forgiveness is never easy, but it is always necessary because it reflects the gospel itself.
